Tuol Sleng – Torture Musem
Cambodia – Phnom Penh:
Cambodia, with it’s broken and war-torn history, is a reminder of the atrocities humankind is capable of. Lest the world forget and turn a blind eye to the trauma of Cambodia during the Khmer Rouge regime between 1975 – 1979, so stands the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum of Phnom Penh. Formerly the Tuol Sleng Highschool, during the Khmer Rouge transformed into one of the world’s worst prison camps – Secret Security Prison 21 (S-21). An interrogation/detention/execution centre, it is an evidence of the evil manifested from a paranoid dictator regime. Walking through the classrooms converted into jails or torture rooms, words and breath fall into your chest. Everything is still there, torture chambers and beds, interrogation desks, chains, small cells, play equipment turned into torture equipment, barbwire, skulls and bones of victims and small cages for mice used to torture in the most graphic and terrible way. A stark reminder of the recent history of Cambodia, it is a place that makes you fall silent, reflect, and leaves you empathetic to Cambodia’s story. It is a deep trip into the mental insanity of the Khmer Rouge Regime.
