Pushkar Camel Fair
The Pushkar Camel Fair runs every year for two weeks at towards the end of October in Rajasthan, India.
The Pushkar Camel Fair takes place in Rajasthan, Northern India each year. Camel traders and farmers from across the region travel up to 3 weeks to the valley outside the small town to trade their herds. Some traders bring families, others travel in groups and some are alone with their solitary animal.
Whilst the event attracts numerous busloads of foreign tourists, this is definitely a local event, and the tourists are in the most part, totally ignored. This was a rare opportunity to take the time to join these camel traders and get a glimpse into the way they live. They would often welcome me to sit with them and drink tea, and share my photos with them.
Despite having no common language, hand gestures and drawings in the dirt were enough for me to communicate with the traders. They were friendly people who live a very simple life. While I stayed in a nearby luxury tent, most of them slept outside on a mat surrounded by their camels.
The otherwise barren valley is littered with hundreds of camels, which wait patiently as their owners weave around the herds to do business. Dust from the valley fills the air but is not enough to overpower the smell of livestock and the burning of campfires.
