Hampi is a village in northern Karnataka state, India. Encompassed by spellbound ranges of megaliths and the astonishing plains of the Tungabhadra riversides, rests Hampi, one of the jewels of Karnataka, the most extraordinary witness of the Vijayanagara Empire’s ancient glory.
Hampi has been a world famous destination since the Middle Ages, enchanting travelers such as Domingo Paes, Nicolo’ dei Conti and Abdul Razaq. These explorers lyrically described it as a place of unequaled grandeur. The story of the empire started in the first half of 1300 AD when Sultan Tuglak imprisoned warrior brothers Hakka and Bukka during a battle to conquer the nearby Kingdom of Kampili.
